ORANGEVILLE, ON – December 10, 2024
Headwaters Health Care Foundation is pleased to announce the purchase of a Bookwalter Retractor Set and Prostatectomy Instrumentation with thanks to Lions Clubs International Foundation, Orangeville Lions Club, Grand Valley Lions Club, Shelburne Lions Club, and the Lions Clubs of District A-9. This equipment will truly transform the level of cancer care offered at Headwaters Health Care Centre.
Over the past 5 years, 237 patients in the Headwaters catchment underwent radical prostatectomy procedures elsewhere. Most commonly patients are sent to University Health Network in Toronto (28%), followed by William Osler Health System in Brampton (21%) and St. Joseph’s Health Care in Hamilton (11%). Providing radical prostatectomy procedures at Headwaters will eliminate the need for patients to travel outside of the community for care, expedite cancer care to patients, and reduce systemic pressures by minimizing need to transfer patients to hospitals with long surgical wait times
The local Lions Clubs have been very supportive of Headwaters Health Care Centre for many years, from annual gifts to support equipment purchases, to providing volunteer support to our many projects. With over 20 years of support and over $400,000 gifted, they have made a significant difference to our hospital. This particular project was supported in large part by funds donated by the Orangeville Lions TV Bingo. Long time Orangeville Lions member Dan Roach, and Lions Past District Governor Wally Pugh spearheaded this latest project in conjunction with Lions Clubs International Foundation.
Quotes:
“As an Orangeville Lion and member of our community I am extremely proud of the relationship our club and Lions Clubs International Foundation have had in supporting Headwaters Health Care Foundation since its inception. I am also proud of our community for supporting the Orangeville Lions TV Bingo, which allowed us to contribute $20,000 towards this project. I truly believe Headwaters Health Care Centre touches all of us in the community at some point.”
- Dan Roach, Orangeville Lions Club Member
“This grant will make a huge difference to the level of care provided at Headwaters Health Care Centre, expanding our services to include care for patients who need prostate surgery. We are grateful to the Lions Clubs International Foundation, Orangeville Lions Club, Grand Valley Lions Club, Shelburne Lions Club and the Lions Clubs of District A-9 for their generous contributions to our hospital for so many years, helping to ensure exceptional care, close to home.”
- K.C. Carruthers, CEO, Headwaters Health Care Foundation.
“The Bookwalter Retractor Set and Prostatectomy Instrumentation will allow surgeons at Headwaters to perform surgeries on individuals with prostate cancer. Prior to this gift, we were unable to offer this procedure to patients at our hospital, instead we would send them to hospitals outside of the region. Funding this equipment will improve care for patients by expediting cancer care and reducing systemic pressures through a reduced need to transfer patients to distant hospitals with long surgical wait times.”
- Dr. Shreyas Gandhi, Chief of Urology, Headwaters Health Care Centre
